Leaders-in-Training (LIT)

Rising 8th Graders

Becoming an LIT is the perfect introduction to learning to be a camp counselor! It’s your 8th grader’s first taste of a leadership role, where they can bring enthusiasm and exciting camp moments to a regular camp day. LITs will have hands-on experience working with Camp Isidore Alterman campers. These individuals will focus on the Jewish value of ruach (spirit), bringing positivity to the camp community. LITs participate in weekly cohort meetings featuring leaders from the community to focus on leadership development, team building, and best practices for working with children. They are eligible to receive hours of community service.

Staff-in-Training (SIT)

Rising 9th Graders

SITs will have hands-on experience working with campers at Camp Isidore Alterman. These creative and hardworking individuals focus on the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam (social justice/community service) with weekly projects to make the world better and engage campers. SITs participate in twice-weekly cohort meetings focusing on leadership development, moving from ideas to action, and best practices for working with children. They are eligible to receive hours of community service.

The LIT and SIT programs are a proud partner of JumpSpark, The Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta’s teen initiative, and are not eligible for financial assistance or the Multiple-Week Discount. MJCCA Day Camps registration and refund policies (see page 26) also apply to the LIT and SIT Programs. Additionally, MJCCA Day Camps will not issue any credits or refunds if you are terminated from the LIT and SIT programs at any point during the summer. LIT and SIT participants are placed in a Camp Isidore Alterman group with limited spots. The deadline to register for the LIT and SIT Programs is May 15, 2024.

Teen Chaverim

Rising 7th–12th Graders with Special Needs

Our Chaverim program includes staff experienced in working with children with special needs, a low camper-to-staff ratio, and access to our camp activities. Each week will be a new small group cohort of campers.

As part of their curriculum, Chaverim campers have an amazing time running the camp Shuk, modeled after an Israeli marketplace. Younger campers exchange shekels (coins) for goodies like entertaining toys and delicious snacks. Shopping helps strengthen decision-making and social skills for campers. For our Chaverim campers, the Shuk fosters independence, helps improve communication skills, increases pride, offers responsibility, and gives them the chance to chat with
fellow campers.

Please Note: A minimum number of campers enrolled in this program is required.

Before registering for the Teen Chaverim, parents of new campers must contact an Inclusion & Camp Success Team Director to learn about our application process. We will work with your family and evaluate your child’s current placement to best determine if a facilitator is needed. Spaces will fill quickly, so be sure to secure your child’s spot when registration opens in January.
